Why were there
four long, generally cool periods during which continent-sized glaciers advanced and
retreated? |

but by Ice |
The next ice age
could begin any day. Next week, next month, next year, it's not a question of if, only
when. One day you'll wake up--or you won't wake up, rather--buried beneath nine stories of
snow. It's all part of a dependable, predictable cycle, a natural cycle that returns like
clockwork every 11,500 years. |

| Milankovitch Cycles in
Paleoclimate |
Milankovich
cycles are cycles in the Earth's orbit that influence the amount of solar radiation
striking different parts of the Earth at different times of year. They are named after a
Serbian mathematician, Milutin Milankovitch, who explained how these orbital cycles cause
the advance and retreat of the polar ice caps. Although they are named after Milankovitch,
he was not the first to link orbital cycles to climate. Adhemar (1842) and Croll (1875)
were two of the earliest. |

| The Last Great
Ice Age - Reading: The Blue Planet: pp. 317-340 |
The last Ice Age
reached its coldest point about 21,000 years ago, and by 15,000 years ago was well on its
way to decline. This period is the most recent example we have of a climate situation that
was globally dramatically different. In this section, we will see what aspects of climate
changed, how we know (or think we know) this, and what factors likely caused the changes. |
||||
| Do you know why we had an ice age? |
The Nerd
Responds: Weather can be unpredictable, but ice ages are actually fairly predictable. The
meteorite (or comet, depending on which theory you choose) that probably wiped out the
dinosaurs probably did cause an ice age, but there have been many many ice ages to come
and go since then. In fact, ice ages occur on this planet just about every 100,000 years
(of varying intensity depending on other factors). |

| THE ICE AGES | The ice ages are
among the most widely recognised palaeoclimatic events. Everybody has heard of them now
and the last glacial episode, which culminated at about 18 ka, is the best understood
interval of geological time(not saying much!), but the recognition of ice as a major
geomorphological agent |

| The Seasons and the Earth's Orbit - Milankovitch Cycles | We have all been
taught that the seasons are caused by the tilt of the Earth's axis of rotation - the
23.4° offset of the axis from a direction perpendicular to the Earth's orbital plane. The
direction of the rotational axis stays nearly fixed in space, even as the Earth revolves
around the Sun once each year. As a result, when the Earth is at a certain place in its
orbit, the northern hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun and experiences summer. Six months
later, when the Earth is on the opposite side of the Sun, the northern hemisphere is
tilted away from the Sun and experiences winter. The seasons are, of course, reversed for
the southern hemisphere. |

| Astronomical data and the Aryan question by Koenraad Elst, Leuven (Belgium), 21 December 1998 | A1. Dating the
Rg-Veda The determination of the age in which Vedic literature started and flourished has
its consequences for the Aryan Invasion question. The oldest text, the RgVeda, is full
of precise references to places and natural phenomena in what are now Panjab and Haryana,
and was unmistakably composed in that part of India. The date at which it was composed is
a firm terminus ante quem for the entry of the Vedic Aryans into India. They may have come
from abroad or they may have been fully native, but by the time of the RgVeda, they were
certainly Indians without memory of a foreign homeland. |

| The Big Chill by Kirk A. Maasch | During the past
billion years, the Earth's climate has fluctuated between warm periods - sometimes even
completely ice-free - and cold periods, when glaciers scoured the continents. The cold
periods - or ice ages - are times when the entire Earth experiences notably colder
climatic conditions. During an ice age, the polar regions are cold, there are large
differences in temperature from the equator to the pole, and large, continental-size
glaciers can cover enormous regions of the earth. |
