			Milankovitch Cycles in Paleoclimate	Milankovich cycles are cycles in the Earth's orbit that influence the amount of solar radiation striking different parts of the Earth at different times of year. They are named after a Serbian mathematician, Milutin Milankovitch, who explained how these orbital cycles cause the advance and retreat of the polar ice caps. Although they are named after Milankovitch, he was not the first to link orbital cycles to climate. Adhemar (1842) and Croll (1875) were two of the earliest.

This period is the most recent example we have of a climate situation that was globally dramatically different. 			THE ICE AGES	The ice ages are among the most widely recognised palaeoclimatic events. Everybody has heard of them now and the last glacial episode, which culminated at about 18 ka, is the best understood interval of geological time(not saying much!), but the recognition of ice as a major geomorphological agent was a long and painful process:
			The Seasons and the Earth's Orbit - Milankovitch Cycles	We have all been taught that the seasons are caused by the tilt of the Earth's axis of rotation - the 23.4° offset of the axis from a direction perpendicular to the Earth's orbital plane. The direction of the rotational axis stays nearly fixed in space, even as the Earth revolves around the Sun once each year. As a result, when the Earth is at a certain place in its orbit, the northern hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun and experiences summer. Six months later, when the Earth is on the opposite side of the Sun, the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun and experiences winter. The seasons are, of course, reversed for the southern hemisphere.

The oldest text, the Rg­Veda, is full of precise references to places and natural phenomena in what are now Panjab and Haryana, and was unmistakably composed in that part of India.
